O1: Go canyoning in the Azores

One of the best things to do on the island of Flores is canyoning. It’s one of the only places in the world where you can rappel right down to the ocean. While you’re there explore waterfalls, hike volcanos, savour crisp local wines and soak up the emerald green beauty and stunning floral displays. The Azores are a short hop from Europe and less than 5 hours from the East Coast of America.

O6: Kayak along the Duoro

Kayaking the upper Douro River in Portugal near Vila Nova Foz Coa

Kayak in the calm waters at Barca d’Alva in the upper Douro River, less than a kilometre from the Portugal-Spain border, it’s a more natural wilderness located within the Douro International Natural Park. Epic have a two day Kayak journey that includes overnight wild camping with a delicious private chef-prepared meal and local wines as a reward.

O7: Search for Wolves in Northern Portugal

The Iberian Wolf like many of the wild animal populations in Europe has diminished in numbers over time, but they can still be found in parts of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, which sits on the northern border, about 66 miles (107 kilometres) northeast of Porto. A favourite with hikers and outdoors enthusiasts, you can explore the region with an expert Epic guide, and if you don’t see a wolf, you can bump into wild horses, deer and Barrosã cattle. Experiences in this area directly support projects preserving wildlife and local ways of life.

O9: Build a trip around a festival

Why not plan a trip around one of your passions? In Morocco for art buff’s you can enjoy the 154 African Arts festival in February – it’s a lot of fun and you get to hang out with the Marrakech hipsters with a lively restaurant and bar scene. Or if you’re more into music – explore local international quality artists at the Gnaoua festival in the coastal medina town of Essaouira from the 25th to 27th June, or try the acclaimed Fes Festival of World Sacred Music usually in late May or June.

In Portugal, Lisbon is the centre for contemporary Summer music festivals, while the coastal Cascais Cool Jazz festival is a less hectic alternative.
