Off-beat Portugal: the Epic 9-day adventure itinerary
Adventure is never far around the corner in Portugal. Our team at Epic have explored the wildest inner depths of the country, seeking unusual and thrilling adventures, best suited for intrepid explorers – and away from the crowds.
This 9-day Portugal adventure itinerary starts in the Douro Valley. Skip by the man-made vines by heading inland where the valley opens up to wild and remote rolling hills and rapid-like waters best attacked by kayak. Then, take your adventures higher at Serra da Estrela. Verdant green in summer, and dusted with snow in winter, this is the highest mainland mountain. Canyon down its glacial valleys or glide along its mountaintop lakes by SUP after a day of hiking remote hills with an expert local guide. Finally, the heart of adventure lies in Portugal’s wild Atlantic waters – and the central coastline is where you’ll find some of the world’s highest waves on a board.
Hit the dirt paths and join us on a journey of discovery to Portugal’s most remote parts. You certainly won’t tire of the diverse landscapes as you blaze a trail across the country’s more off-beat adventure scene.

The 9-day Portugal adventure itinerary at a glance
- Days 1-3: Douro Valley – The oldest demarcated wine-growing region in the world. Visiting a historic family-run quinta is a must-do experience when you’re not exploring its rolling hills and rapid rivers with a paddle.
- Days 3-6: Serra da Estrela – Glacial valleys and mountain-top lakes decorate the landscape of mainland Portugal’s highest mountain. It’s the perfect place to disconnect and explore nature at its rawest form.
- Days 6-9: Silver Coast – While most epic for its giant waves, off the water you’ll encounter long-stretching golden sandy beaches sheltered by high-hanging cliffs. This underrated coastline has a remote, wild feeling.

Days 1-3: Douro Valley, an alternative side to the wine region
Skip the cities – your Portugal journey begins with a two-hour drive deep into the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the birthplace of one of the country’s most prized exports: port wine. But this adventure itinerary isn’t the polished, postcard version of the Douro. Instead you’ll explore the raw side – with wild riverbanks, ancient terraced hillsides, and quiet corners. You’ll check into a historic quinta, dramatically perched above the valley with sweeping views of the landscape.
Kayaking the hidden Douro
The next day, trade the road for water. Paddle alongside an expert guide on a full-day kayaking adventure down one of Europe’s most beautiful – and least explored – rivers. Glide down the river passing remote abandoned train stations, stopping off at the bankside to pick wild figs, fresh from the trees. You’ll discover the Douro in its rawest form.

Wild camping under the stars
As the sun sets, you’ll pull into a secluded bespoke campsite on the grounds of an old estate. There’s no Wi-Fi, no crowds – just the sound of the river and the crackle of a campfire. You’ll help prepare a rustic wild cooking feast, paired with exceptional wines from the surrounding vineyards. Then, fall asleep under a blanket of stars, tucked into the stillness of the valley.

Days 3-6: Serra da Estrela, Portugal’s highest SUP adventure
Leave the winding riverbanks of the Douro behind as you head south and ascend to new heights – literally. A two-hour drive takes you into the heart of the Serra da Estrela mountains. Pass through rustic stone schist villages and watch the scenery shift dramatically as you go up, up, up to where granite outcrops, alpine meadows, and glacial-carved valleys stretch out before you.

Portugal’s highest SUP tour
At 1,600 meters above sea level, Lagoa Comprida is home to the highest stand-up paddleboarding experience in Portugal. Float across its crystal-clear waters as a local guide leads you on a circular route, surrounded by towering granite formations and green flora. The contrast of the deep blue lagoon against the rugged, high-altitude terrain makes this a SUP tour like no other.
Hiking the Zêzere Glacial Valley
Your mountain lodge sits on the edge of the Zêzere Valley – a dramatic U-shaped glacial corridor carved by ancient ice over 20,000 years ago. Adventure is on your doorstep – step straight onto some of Portugal’s most scenic and diverse trails. With routes for all levels, an expert local guide will lead the way to hidden waterfalls, panoramic viewpoints, and secret alpine nooks – all while making sure you’re kitted out with the best gear.
Did you know that every Epic trip includes a 24/7 concierge service? It’s not an emergency number – it’s a personal contact of a person dedicated to making your stay easier and more pleasant.
Days 6-9: Silver Coast, sunrise salutations and surf sessions
Your final stop is Portugal’s wild western frontier – the dramatic cliffs and windswept beaches of the Silver Coast. A few hours’ drive brings you to the edge of the Atlantic, where your clifftop accommodation offers uninterrupted views of the ocean and the soundtrack of crashing waves around the clock.

Sunrise yoga by the sea
In the morning, join a local yogi for a private sunrise session on the beach. As the first light spills across the ocean, move through an energising flow guided by the rhythm of the tides. Post-session, enjoy a beachside breakfast of regional favourites – think fresh pastries, local cheeses, and seasonal fruits – fueling you for the day ahead.
Surf’s up!
Portugal’s reputation as a global surf destination is well-earned – and here on the Silver Coast, you’ll experience it firsthand. Under the expert guidance of a seasoned local surf instructor (with over 20 years’ experience), you’ll hit the waves with premium gear and personalised coaching, matched to your level (whether you’re a total beginner or looking to level up). This stretch of coastline is known for its raw beauty, consistent swell, and uncrowded surf – the perfect setting to end your trip with a salty, sun-drenched high..
